Looking a player up

How do I look up an RS3 player?

Type the player’s RuneScape name into the search box on the homepage. The Codex pulls their skills, levels, total XP, combat level, and quest progress live from Jagex’s RuneMetrics profile.

Why can’t I find a player?

The most common reason is that their RuneMetrics profile is set to private, Jagex hides those from every lookup tool, including this one. Otherwise, check the spelling, or the player may have changed their name recently.

The page tells the two apart. From the search box, a name Jagex does not know gets "Player not found, double-check the spelling and try again." Opened by its address, such as a shared link, it gets a page headed "No player called" and the name. Either way, a private profile gets a message that says it is private.

What happens when a profile is private?

If an account's RuneMetrics profile is set to private, The Codex simply can't see it. Jagex hides private profiles from every lookup tool, and only the player can change that setting.

While a profile is private The Codex cannot take new readings of it, so its gains and charts stop until it is public again.

A clan race is an exception. It reads Jagex's clan member list, not RuneMetrics, so members with private profiles are counted too.

What if a player changed their name?

The Codex does not follow a name change by itself. The old name stops being found, and the new name starts its own history the first time it is looked up.

When a tracked name has stopped answering and the profile you open looks like the same account, the page asks whether it is the same player renamed. Someone who is signed in and has claimed one of the two names can confirm it, and a search for the old name then offers the new one.

You can also ask for a character's history to be moved to its new name.

Does The Codex support Ironman accounts?

Yes. Ironman, Hardcore Ironman and Group Ironman accounts are detected automatically and badged on the player's profile.

How tracking works

Does it track XP gains over time?

Yes. RuneMetrics only shows a player’s stats right now, so once an account has been looked up, The Codex re-checks it regularly, usually within a day or two (daily once its owner has verified it), and keeps those readings for the charts. From there you get XP gained over 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, a daily-gains heatmap, and projected dates for your next milestones.

What does "Tracked 3h ago" on a profile mean?

It is when The Codex last recorded a reading of that player. Those readings are what the charts and XP gains are built from. Accounts are re-checked regularly, usually within a day or two, and pressing Refresh records one right away.

The levels and XP on the profile itself are read from Jagex when you open it (one reading is reused for up to five minutes), so they can be newer than the Tracked time.

Why does XP today say +0 when I have been training?

XP today is counted from the first reading The Codex took of the player that day, and the day starts at midnight UTC. Anything earned earlier that day, before that first reading, is not in the figure, so it can read +0 straight after the day's first reading. From then on it counts up as the player trains.

Until the first reading of the day has been taken, the figure is counted from the newest reading of the most recent earlier day that has one, looking back up to six days.

How do I update a profile right now?

Press Refresh beside the Tracked time on the profile. It re-reads the player from RuneScape and records a reading straight away. It can be pressed again after a minute.

Where does the data come from?

Every level, XP total, activity and quest comes from Jagex's public RuneMetrics API. The Codex keeps daily snapshots of those public numbers, which is what makes gains, charts and alerts possible.

How does the drops log work?

Every re-check reads the player's RuneMetrics activity feed for notable drops. They are grouped by boss and kept over time, so the log keeps growing.

Your account

Is The Codex free?

Yes, completely free, with no account, no download, and no ads. You can look up any RuneScape 3 player straight away; signing in with Discord is optional.

What does signing in with Discord do?

Signing in is optional. You sign in with Discord to claim your own profile, and once it is claimed to set goals and pin a rival. Getting alerts in Discord and starting a squad need it too.

The Codex stores your Discord user ID and the username and avatar Discord returns. It cannot read your messages, your servers' contents, or anything else in your account.

How do I claim my RS3 account?

Sign in with Discord, open your profile and press Claim this profile. To prove it is yours, set your RuneMetrics profile to Private in your RuneScape settings and press check, then switch it back to Public so tracking continues. Only the real owner can change that setting.

If your profile is already private, the check asks you to switch it to public instead. Changing the setting is the proof, whichever way it starts, and the verify window tells you which way to move it.

What does verifying unlock?

Verifying proves the character is yours. Today a verified character gets:

  • A verified mark on its profile, and beside its name in search suggestions.
  • An "Also plays as" row that links the other characters you have verified under the same Discord login. It is opt-in, and you can hide the row any time.
  • A reading at least once a day, so its streaks and daily gains stop having holes.
  • A showcase: one thing at the top of the profile, a cape, a milestone with its date or a drop, with a short line of your own. Open your profile, press More, then Set your showcase.
  • A Privacy section on your dashboard, with three switches for each character.

Once a character is verified, nobody else can claim it unless they pass the same check themselves.

Can I show my alt accounts on my profile?

Yes. Verify more than one account under the same Discord login and they link together with an 'Also plays as' row. It is opt-in: only accounts you have verified yourself ever link, and you can hide the row any time.

Alerts

Can I get notified when I hit a milestone?

Yes, you can connect a Discord webhook to get pinged when a level 99, 120, 200M XP, a new cape, or a notable drop happens. It works for a single player or for an entire clan.

How do I turn alerts on?

Open a profile and press Alerts, the bell. On a phone, press the three dots beside the name of the player, then Get milestone alerts. For Discord, sign in, then choose between a webhook that posts to a channel in your server and a direct message to you.

The Codex sends a test message first, and saves the alert only if that message arrives.

What can an alert tell me about?

You pick one of four levels:

  • Milestones only: level 99, level 120, 200m XP, and the Max, Master Max and Quest capes.
  • Milestones and drops: all of those, plus notable item drops from bosses and slayer.
  • Level ups: levels gained from a level you choose upward, plus all milestones.
  • Everything: all of the above plus every activity, kill counts, XP milestones, purchases, and more.

Can I get alerts without Discord?

Yes. The same Alerts window has a part called On this device. Turn alerts on there for this phone or computer and you get the same milestones, drops, level-ups and activity the Discord alerts carry, as notifications, with nothing to sign into. On iPhone, add The Codex to your Home Screen first.

Why did an alert arrive late?

An alert is sent when a background job next reads the player from Jagex and sees the change, not at the moment it happens in the game. When Jagex is refusing requests or slow to answer, alerts can be late.

How do I change or stop an alert?

Open the Alerts window on that profile again. Discord alerts can be changed or turned off there, and alerts on this phone or computer can be turned off for each player.

Races and squads

Can I track a clan or Group Ironman team?

Yes. Look up a few members and their clan or Group Ironman group gets its own page with a combined leaderboard. You can also create a private Squad, a weekly XP race between any players you choose.

What is a squad?

A squad is a private XP leaderboard for whoever you add, with a weekly XP race and a podium. Starting one needs a Discord sign-in, so the squad is yours to manage, and you can add or remove players later.

What is a race?

A race is an XP race for a whole clan, with one link to share. Anyone can start one, you choose how long it runs, and nobody signs in or signs up: every clan member is in from the start, private profiles included, because the numbers come from Jagex's clan member list, not RuneMetrics. A clan race counts Overall XP for every member, and the page says how old its numbers are.

A race can also be for up to 50 names typed in from anywhere. A list race can count Overall XP, levels gained or a single skill.

Privacy and removing things

What does The Codex store?

It keeps public RuneScape stats so it can show you how they change over time, and, only if you sign in, the small amount of Discord information needed to know an account is yours. The Codex does not have, ask for, or want your Jagex login, email, password, bank, or anything private.

The Privacy Policy lists everything that is stored, why, and for how long.

How do I get my data removed?

You can remove notification settings and un-claim an account yourself at any time from your profile. To have a player's tracked history deleted, or your Discord link removed entirely, ask via the feedback form or in the Discord server and it will be done, no justification needed. If you'd rather an account was never tracked at all, say so and it will be blocked from lookups.

Can I hide things about my own character?

If a character is yours and you have verified it, you can change how it appears yourself, without asking anyone. Your dashboard has three switches for each verified character:

  • Hide my drops. Your drops log and drop lines in your feed are hidden from everyone but you. Other people's alerts and your clan's channel stop getting your drops; your own Discord alert keeps working. Phone alerts for your drops stop too.
  • Leave the player lists. You're taken off the A to Z list, random player, search suggestions and the sitemap. Leaderboards are not affected, and your profile still opens by its exact name.
  • Keep me out of races and squads. Your character never shows in any race or squad, including ones already running. Whoever added your name just won't see it appear.

These switches hide things. They do not delete them.

Something looks wrong

Is something wrong with the site right now?

The status page says whether player lookups from Jagex, tracking and alerts are working, having trouble, or cannot be told right now, and when it last checked.

Why does a profile say RuneMetrics isn't answering?

Jagex's RuneMetrics service did not answer when the page asked for the player. If the profile was opened on The Codex in the last 7 days and Jagex answered then, the page shows the copy it saved and says how old it is.

With no saved copy the page says "Couldn't reach the RS3 API right now. Give it a moment and try again."

A number on a profile looks behind. What should I check?

Look at the Tracked time first. Gains and charts are built from the readings The Codex has taken, and accounts are re-checked regularly, usually within a day or two, so a profile showing figures from yesterday is working normally. Press Refresh to take a reading now. If it still looks wrong, send it in with the name of the player.

What if signing in with Discord fails?

You land on a Codex page that says so plainly and offers another try, and the owner is alerted if it keeps happening.

How do I report a problem or get in touch?

Use Send feedback, or ask in the Discord. The Codex is built and run by one person, and it gets better because people send things in. Feedback lands in a private inbox that gets read. A contact is optional, but handy if you would like a reply.

For anything privacy- or security-related, including reporting a vulnerability, use the same two routes. Security reports are welcome and will be acted on rather than argued with.
