Accessibility
This page says what has been done to make The Codex usable with a keyboard, with a screen reader and with reduced motion, what has not been checked, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.
Last updated 12 October 2026
What has been done
Each of these is in the site today. The dates are when the work was done or the check was made.
Using a keyboard
- The first thing the Tab key reaches on every page is a link that skips to the main content.
- The player search works from the keyboard: the arrow keys move through the suggestions, Enter picks one and Escape closes the list.
- The row of tabs on a profile is a single stop for the Tab key. The left and right arrows move between the tabs, and Home and End jump to the first and the last.
- The More menu on a profile puts focus on its first item when it opens. The arrow keys move through it, and Escape closes it and puts focus back on the button.
- Pop-up windows, such as the alerts window, the verify window, the welcome window and the More sheet on a phone, move focus inside when they open, keep the Tab key inside, close on Escape and put focus back where it was.
- Links, buttons and tabs show a gold outline when the keyboard reaches them. Some controls mark focus another way, with a gold border or a change of background.
Using a screen reader
- When you move from one page to another, the name of the new page is announced. A player lookup moves focus to the player's name instead, so the name is read once.
- The search box has a name a screen reader can read, and a line beside it says how many suggestions have arrived.
- The XP, drop rate and cost calculators and the goal planner announce their answer when the numbers change.
- The Skills, Activities, Quests, Drops, Progress and Compare tabs of a profile each start with a heading for screen readers, so a profile can be skimmed by its headings.
- The announcement bar is a labelled region of the page, and it is announced when it appears.
Seeing the page, and motion
- The colour used for small secondary text and the gold used for labels each measure at least 4.5 to 1 against the four panel colours they sit on. Both were changed on 9 October 2026, after the automated check described below found the old ones too faint.
- Animations are written to switch off or cut short when your device asks for reduced motion. That was last walked through by hand on 5 September 2026.
- The site sets no limit on zooming a page in. A pinch does not zoom when it starts on a price chart, on the XP chart or the highlighted part of the slider under it, or on the More sheet that opens from the bottom bar and the dimmed page behind it while that sheet is open. Those keep touches for dragging and scrolling.
Automated checks
- On 9 October 2026 three live pages were run through axe-core, an automated checker: the leaderboards, a player profile and the homepage. It reported 117 faults on the leaderboards, every one the same faint text colour, 4 on the profile, and on the homepage the announcement bar sitting outside every landmark. After the fixes the leaderboards and the profile were run again and reported none. The homepage fault was fixed the same day; the record does not show that page being run again.
- A smaller check written for this site looks at eight pages for buttons and links with no name, pictures with no description, form fields with no label and skipped heading levels. When it was written, on 22 August 2026, it found six unlabelled form fields and a skipped heading level, and those were fixed.
What is not known, or not good yet
This list is here on purpose. It is what has not been tested, and the faults the site is known to have.
- Nobody who relies on a screen reader, a switch or voice control has tested the site. Every check on this page was made while building it, with a keyboard, with automated tools and by reading what the browser hands to a screen reader.
- The site has not been audited against any accessibility standard, and this page does not claim that it meets one.
- The automated checker has been run on three pages, on one day. Most pages have never been through it, and neither has anything added since.
- Neither check runs by itself. Both are run by hand, so a later change can undo a fix without anything noticing.
- The footer of each page sits inside the main content, so a screen reader is not offered a separate footer landmark.
- Closing the desktop site menu with the Escape key does not put focus back on the Menu button.
- The Curve and Bars switch on the XP tab is announced as a pair of tabs but does not answer to the arrow keys. The Tab and Enter keys still work on it.
- The charts are pictures drawn by the page. What a screen reader is given in their place has not been checked.
- Only the two text colours named above have been measured against every panel. Other colour pairs have been checked only where they appear on the three pages the automated checker saw.
- Animations added since 5 September 2026 have not been walked through again with reduced motion switched on.
