Efficient Skilling in RS3: The XP Numbers That Matter (and How to Train Smart)
Skilling in RuneScape 3 goes faster when you understand the shape of the XP curve and pick methods that fit how you actually play. Here are the numbers worth knowing and the framework for using them.
The XP curve is exponential — and it changes how you plan
Every level costs roughly 10% more XP than the last, so the totals balloon at the top. Two facts do most of the planning for you:
- Level 92 is halfway to 99. 92 is 6,517,253 XP; 99 is 13,034,431 XP. So the jump from 92 to 99 costs as much as everything before it combined. When a method says "92+", that's the real halfway mark.
- 99 to 120 is about seven times the whole grind to 99. Level 120 (in the skills that go that high) is 104,273,167 XP — so the 99→120 stretch is roughly 91 million XP, versus the ~13 million it took to reach 99. The full curve and milestone table live in the XP & Level System reference.
Plan a specific goal with the exact numbers on the XP Calculator, or line up several skills at once (with an optional time estimate) on the Goal Planner.
Active vs AFK: pick the right tool for the session
Most methods trade attention for speed:
- Active methods give the highest XP/hour but need near-constant input — best when you're focused and want a level now.
- AFK / low-effort methods are slower per hour but let you train while doing something else, so they often win on XP per real-life hour of effort.
A good rule: use active methods for the skills you care about hitting a milestone in soon, and AFK methods for everything you're just chipping away at.
Gathering vs production
Skills roughly split into:
- Gathering (Woodcutting, Fishing, Mining, Hunter, Divination) — you collect raw materials, often more AFK-friendly and sometimes profitable.
- Production (Cooking, Fletching, Crafting, Smithing, etc.) — you turn materials into products; usually faster XP but you're spending the gathered resources (or buying them).
Pairing a gathering skill you AFK with a production skill you burn the materials on is a classic, efficient loop — and several gathering skills make money while you train them.
Get the current best method (rates change)
Exact XP/hour, best-in-slot outfits, and the current meta method shift with every update — so look them up rather than trusting a number that might be a year old:
- RuneScape Wiki training guides — a maintained guide for every skill, with F2P and P2P methods and rates.
- Each skill's own wiki page (e.g. Woodcutting) links straight to its training guide.
Track every level as it lands
Search your name on The Codex and your XP is tracked automatically — see per-skill progress toward 99, 120, and 200M, plus a heatmap of your daily gains so you can tell which methods are actually moving the needle. XP data and method links here are courtesy of the RuneScape Wiki.
