Elite Skills in RS3: Which Skills Go to 110 and 120

If you've only ever chased 99s, RuneScape 3's skill caps can surprise you: the game has three cap tiers, not one. Here's exactly where each skill stops and what the higher tiers cost.

The three cap tiers

RS3 has 29 skills. Their real level caps break down like this:

Cap 120 (13 skills): Attack, Strength, Ranged, Magic, Necromancy, Slayer, Herblore, Farming, Thieving, Construction, Dungeoneering, Archaeology, and Invention.

Cap 110 (8 skills): Mining, Smithing, Woodcutting, Fletching, Firemaking, Runecrafting, Crafting, and Hunter.

Cap 99 (8 skills): Defence, Constitution, Prayer, Cooking, Fishing, Agility, Summoning, and Divination.

(Caps shift as Jagex reworks skills — Construction became a 120 skill in the 2026 Player-Owned House update, for example. The live per-skill caps are always shown on the Max XP tool.)

A note on the term "elite skill"Officially, RS3 has exactly one elite skill — Invention — with its own unlock requirements and XP curve. Players often use "elite skills" loosely for any skill that goes past 99, which is how this guide uses it. But a high cap alone doesn't make a skill elite in the strict sense: Necromancy, for example, is a normal combat skill that simply caps at 120.

What the higher tiers actually cost

Because XP is exponential, each cap tier is a huge step up:

So level 110 is about three times the XP of a 99, and 120 is roughly eight times a 99 — over 90 million XP past 99. Invention is the exception: it uses its own curve, so 120 Invention is 80,618,654 XP, not 104M.

Virtual levels

Even on skills capped at 99, the game tracks virtual levels past the cap based on your XP — so a 99-capped skill with lots of XP can read as a "virtual 105", and skills continue up to virtual 120 (150 for Invention). Virtual levels don't unlock anything; they're a way to compare progress at the very top. The Codex shows them on profiles when you toggle virtual levels on.

Why chase elite levels

Real unlocks. Elite skills grant meaningful abilities and boosts at their higher levels — not just a bigger number. Invention, the one true elite skill, is the clearest example.
Total level and capes. Elite levels push your total level toward the maximum of 3,232 and count toward the Completionist Cape's requirements.
Bragging rights. A 120 is one of the longest grinds in the game.
