Getting Started with PvM in RuneScape 3
PvM (player-vs-monster) is where a lot of RuneScape 3's money and best rewards come from, but it can feel impenetrable from the outside. This guide gives you a sane order to learn things in — and points you to the community resources that keep the fiddly, ever-changing specifics up to date.

First, pick how you want to fight
RS3 combat runs off an action bar of abilities, and you choose how much of it to press yourself:
- Revolution auto-fires your basic abilities and lets you manually add the big ones. This is the recommended starting point — most of the damage, a fraction of the effort.
- Revolution++ auto-fires more of the bar, including thresholds.
- Full manual presses everything yourself for the highest damage — worth growing into once mechanics feel comfortable.
Don't wait until you're "good enough" to press abilities. Turn on Revolution and start adding a manual ability or two as you get comfortable.
The four combat styles
There are four styles, each with its own gear and abilities: Melee, Ranged, Magic, and Necromancy. Necromancy is the newest and is widely considered one of the most beginner-friendly, because it needs fewer switches and has strong, simple rotations. Any style can clear the game — pick one to learn first rather than spreading thin across all four.

A progression that actually works
- Level combat through Slayer. Slayer trains your combat stats and teaches you to fight a huge variety of monsters — it's the best on-ramp to PvM. (See the Slayer guide.)
- Kill low-level bosses first. Learn the loop — prayer/food management, reading a boss's attacks, using your defensives — somewhere cheap before you risk expensive trips.
- Learn one boss's mechanics before optimising gear. A player who knows the fight in mid-tier gear will out-perform one in best-in-slot who's guessing.
- Upgrade gradually. Buy the biggest single upgrade you can afford (usually a weapon), not a full set at once.
The essentials to have handled
- Food and defensives — bring healing (e.g. brews/rocktails) and know your emergency abilities.
- Prayers/curses and a familiar — the right protection prayer and a combat familiar are big, cheap boosts.
- Death costs — dying returns your gear for a fee; check it before high-level trips so a death isn't a nasty surprise.
Where the specifics live
Exact rotations, gear setups, and kill-time benchmarks change with every update, so lean on the sources that maintain them:
- PvME — the community PvM Encyclopedia: ability rotations, gear progression, and step-by-step boss guides for every style.
- RuneScape Wiki — boss mechanics, drop tables, and strategy pages.
Track the payoff
Rare drops you log while bossing show up on your Codex profile's Drops tab, and your combat XP is tracked automatically — search your name to watch your kills and loot add up over time. Game data and guides referenced here are courtesy of the RuneScape Wiki and PvME.
