RS3 Combat Abilities & the Action Bar Explained
RuneScape 3 combat isn't just auto-attacking — it runs on abilities you place on an action bar and fire in a rotation. Understanding the ability system is the single biggest jump in your damage, more than any gear upgrade.
The three ability types (and adrenaline)
Every combat style's abilities fall into three tiers, tied to a resource called adrenaline (0–100%):
- Basic abilities — your bread and butter. They deal damage and build adrenaline (about 8% each). You'll use these constantly.
- Threshold abilities — stronger hits that cost adrenaline (usually 15%) and need at least 50% adrenaline to use.
- Ultimate abilities — your biggest, often game-changing moves. They cost 100% adrenaline, so you spend a while building up to each one.
Auto-attacks between abilities also build a little adrenaline. The core loop is: spam basics to build adrenaline, spend it on thresholds and ultimates when it's worth it.
Revolution: let the game press your basics
You don't have to press everything yourself. Revolution auto-fires the basic abilities on your bar in order, so you can focus on manually adding thresholds and ultimates at the right moment. It's the recommended way to start — you get most of the damage for a fraction of the effort — and you can graduate to full manual later for the highest output. (See the combat styles guide for how the four styles differ.)
Setting up your action bar
- Put your basics where Revolution can reach them, ordered strongest-first, so the game auto-fires your best available basic.
- Keep thresholds and ultimates for manual use — you want to choose when to spend adrenaline, not auto-dump it.
- Reserve slots for defensives and utility (healing, movement, prayers, familiar scrolls) so they're one keypress away in an emergency.
Don't forget defensive abilities
Some of the most valuable abilities aren't for damage at all — they reduce or negate incoming hits (and a few even heal you). Learning when to press a defensive is what separates surviving a boss from eating dirt. The PvM mechanics guide covers reading a fight so you know when to use them.
Get an optimal rotation
